If you do, brace yourself. You may want to get rid of it because they tend not to work in small churches like they work in large churches. In fact, some of the problems that you think are people related may in fact be Org Chart related. The reason Org Charts tend not to work in small churches has less to do with the nature of small churches than with the nature of Org Charts.
Simply put, an Org Chart is a way of visualizing who does what and who reports to whom in an organization.
Subscribe to RSS
A typical Org Chart will have a CEO at the top, with VPs underneath them, then department heads, all the way down to the average worker. Some Org Charts will be arranged in a circle instead of a top-down structure, but all Org Charts have one thing in common: they are relatively static structures, with the positions staying the same, while the people who fill those positions come and go. An Org Chart becomes more necessary the larger the organization is — whether a for-profit business, or a non-profit church — because it keeps a highly complex system relatively understandable.
But the smaller the organization is, the less helpful an Org Chart becomes. This is why they tend not to work as well in small churches as they do in our bigger counterparts. There tend to be two types of small churches, organizationally. Dynamic small churches and static small churches. Static small churches operate by Org Charts either explicit or implicitwhile dynamic small churches operate by relationships.
Like a large organization, a static small church has an Org Chart with positions that need to be filled. But in a small church the pool of people to draw from is so limited that finding the right fit for each position can be very difficult, if not impossible.

This is why it is so important to use decision-making tools to ensure that all decisions are made with data and objectivity. All tools are used for problem-solving and different tools are used for different types of problems. Once you become familiar with all of the tools you will learn which one to pull out of the toolbox when faced with a problem that needs solving or a decision that needs to be made.
This article will focus on the flowchart and how it can help an organization understand and streamline operational processes. Flowcharts are used to create a picture of a process flow and shows the sequence of events or steps within a process. Every operation within a church is only as efficient as the process that dictates its flow.
For example, if a volunteer application process is slow and inefficient, it can impact the experience of the volunteer. It also allows a team to compare the actual process with an ideal process to identify improvement opportunities. Once a process has been improved the flowchart can be used to train employees and volunteers on the new workflow. It should also be used when auditing a process to ensure it operates within the desired process. From this process picture, you can see how inefficient it would be if either every child were asked to register week after week, or if a new child fell through the cracks and were merely given a name tag.
This could prove to be a problem if that child became ill and there was no information available on the parent.

To create a process flow, identify a team of people who are familiar with the process and have them create the process picture. Have the team write every step of the process and begin arranging the post-it notes in the order of the process. This exercise will very quickly flush out inconsistencies in the flow and bottlenecks in the process. Use a flowcharting software to create an electronic copy. Once the team has agreed on the current process flow, study the steps and look for inefficiencies and redundant steps.
Remove those steps and develop an ideal process. Compare the new process to the old and test the process to ensure its efficiency. If issues are identified with the new process go through the exercise again until the process is streamlined and efficient. As with anything else, it will take you and your team some practice and experience to get good at this but once you do, you will find yourself looking at all of your internal processes and finding ways to improve them!
If you need help learning to make a flowchart, here is a video that will show you how in Microsoft Word. It is important to note up front that the denominations on the chart below represent what some refer to as the "visible" church which is defined by ecclesiology of tradition, architecture, culture, sight, sound, experience etc. I have represented these families in the chart below.
Oriental Orthodox - Not to be confused with the Eastern Orthodox denominations - the Oriental Orthodox churches broke off in the earliest of schisms in Church history. Some were Nestorians, others were "monophysites" a complex understanding of Christology unfairly declared heretical. He would emerge from this contested ecumenical council as "Pope Leo" and was the first to be referred to by that title with the official meaning of "Primal Papal Office". This office would be further solidified in the west by the combination of church and state with the Pope appointing kings and emperors while those kings and emperors would, in turn, influence who would be "Pope".
The office of "Pope" would begin to be authoritatively enforced under Pope Gregory the Great c. AD which would last for nearly a thousand years. This iron-fisted reign of the popes would begin to wane with the introduction of a pre-reformer group called the Waldensians earliest reformers The office of Pope would reach an all-time low, essentially becoming somewhat of a laughing stock among the genuine Christian world with the "Great Papal Schism" of the 14th century where the Roman Catholic church had THREE Popes at once - none of which wanting to give up their authority!
Eastern Orthodox - Eastern Byzantine empire - began forming alongside the "Roman Church" with the division of the Roman empire into east and west. The Eastern church - primarily Greek and North African, spoke a different language, enjoyed a different culture, and eventually held to a different governance ecclesiology over time. The emphasis of the primacy of see of Rome and its Bishop as possessing chief papal authority Pope the Eastern Orthodox church had already begun to operate independently of Rome.
The final spark occurred with the addition of the filioque from the Son to the Nicene creed which led to sharp criticism of the Roman Church with Patriarch Michael Cerularius accusing Pope Leo IX of overstepping his authority. Both East and West churches emerged separate and distinct and have not rejoined since.
This has come to be known as the "Great Schism" of AD. However it should be called the Great Schism of the 3rd - 11th centuries! Protestant Four Family 'sub' groups - A term used to describe those Christians who sought to "reform" the Roman Catholic church. Contrary to popular misnomer, the word did not arise as a result of "protesting" the Pope or the Roman Catholic church. The Church Organization Chart Sample is available for free below to download, customize, print to help organize your church staff If your church does not have an organization chart then you need to use the sample below to create one for your church to keep in your Human Resources Department or church administrative office.
The chart pictured to the right is the sample you can download below. If you convert it to Microsoft Office Word format by links below or buy purchasing the Church Forms CD then you can easily edit this chart by simple clicks and retyping the titles MS Word makes it so easy to edit these charts to change titles, add more blocks, delete blocks, etc. So you have no excuse not to get a chart for your church and put it to good use immediately. If you work in the Human Resources department for a church or any organization then the first thing you would want in your hands is an organization chart like the sample on the right.
The reason for this is because it tells you who does what, who they report to, what their function is, and do they have any real authority. If you want to ever succeed in your church or organization then an organization chart is very critical to have. When you think about it everyone loves structure and organization where everything can fall into place easily without confusion entering into the process. Depending on the size of your church an organization chart may not be necessary.
For example, if you only have three people on your church staff then you would not need one most likely but if you have a large staff of volunteers then it might be helpful. Many churches have seen great missions completely lost from the lack of organization in the church. A lot of times they might have a large group of volunteers willing to help but sometimes the right hand would not know what the left hand was doing so to speak.
So whether you have employees of volunteers be sure to have an organization chart to keep everyone completely organized and everything running smoothly.
